Testing Services

JK ProCare Systems offers the following drug testing services:

• Urine testing
• Oral fluid / saliva testing
• Hair testing (through Occupational Toxicology Services Pty Ltd)

Urine testing:

The detection of drugs using urine is well established with the first version of the Australian Standard AS 4308 being released in 1995.  The current version of this Standard (AS/NZS 4308:2008) includes the requirements for on-site testing of a urine sample.  This is the Standard against which NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) assesses a Collection Agency when that agency seeks accreditation for its operations.

Most drugs can be detected in urine for 1 – 3 days after use and cannabis metabolites can be detected for much longer (30 days or more) particularly with regular or heavy use.

JK ProCare Systems is NATA accredited for on-site testing urine testing.  We use the ProScreen Cup, which is a validated testing device under AS/NZS 4308:2008.  Any urine specimen which cannot be reported as Negative using the on-site testing device is sent to an accredited laboratory for further testing.  Confirmed laboratory results are usually available within 48 hours.

Limitations of the ProScreen Cup urine testing device

This testing device is verified according to the requirements of AS/NZS 4308:2008, which means it reliably functions in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications.  The manufacturer has set the cut-off level for one of the amphetamine-type stimulants, MDMA (Ecstasy) at 500ug/L.  The cut-off level for amphetamine-type stimulants in AS/NZS 4308:2008 is given as 300ug/L.  It is likely that a urine level of MDMA between 300ug/L and 500ug/L will not be detected by the ProScreen Cup and will be falsely reported as Negative.

We have been advised by the manufacturer that the ProScreen Cup is not readily able to detect recent use of temazepam. This is due to the structure of temazepam when it is eliminated from the human body. Some laboratories perform a pre-treatment of sample, which enhances the detection of temazepam.

Oral Fluid / Saliva testing:

The detection of drugs using oral fluid is a more recent development in the workplace drug testing field.   The Australian Standard which covers testing using oral fluid was first released in 2006 (AS 4760-2006).  Collection agencies can apply for NATA accreditation to this Standard but the accreditation granted is currently limited to the collection of samples for laboratory testing due to the unavailability of validated on-site testing devices.

Testing of an oral fluid specimen may be used to establish recent drug use.  It is not appropriate to relate the presence of drugs in oral fluid to impairment, but rather, to recent use.  The detection times for drugs in oral fluid are approximately within 36 hours of use.

The oral fluid sample can be collected either using an absorbent pad which the donor holds in their mouth for a few minutes, or by the donor delivering oral fluid into the collection vessel supplied by the collector.  Approximately 1ml of oral fluid is required to guarantee adequate volume for testing.

When an oral fluid sample requires laboratory confirmation, JK ProCare Systems sends the oral fluid sample to a laboratory accredited to AS 4760-2006.  Confirmed laboratory results are usually available within 48 hours of the laboratory receiving the sample.

Limitations of the First Sign oral fluid testing device

This testing device has a cut-off level for THC (cannabis) of 75ug/L.  The target level in AS4760-2006 for the detection of THC is 25ug/L.  It is likely that an oral fluid level of THC between 25ug/L and 75ug/L will not be detected by the First Sign device and will be falsely reported as Negative.

Hair Testing:

ToxLogic Pty Ltd, formerly Occupational Toxicology Services, collects hair samples that are sent to referral laboratory Cansford Laboratories Ltd, a world leader in drug testing using hair analysis.

The analysis of hair for drugs can help establish a history of a donor’s drug use.  When drugs enter the bloodstream, parent drug and/or metabolites are laid down in the hair as the blood circulates around the hair follicle.  This drug remains in the hair as it grows so, by analysing a length of hair, the drugs used over a certain period of time can be determined.  A 1cm length of hair will give approximately a 1 month history of the donor’s drug use.

Hair collections are done under Chain of Custody conditions using a specialised collection kit supplied by ToxLogic Pty Ltd.  The collection involves cutting 2 locks of hair close to the scalp from the area around the crown of the head.  Each lock should be 50 – 100 hairs and, with normal hair growth, the collection site is not usually visible after collection.  If head hair is not available, body hair can be used except where the request involves testing for alcohol.

When testing for alcohol, the laboratory analyses the sample for Ethyl Glucuronide and Fatty Acid Ethyl Esters.  When used in conjunction with clinical judgement and blood tests, these hair analysis results can be useful in assessing donors who are suspected of chronic alcohol abuse.

Hair analysis for drugs and alcohol is currently used in Australia and overseas by child protection and family law professionals, sporting bodies, drug rehabilitation clinics and security companies.  Hair analysis is most useful as a pre-employment test for the workplace or as part of a long-term monitoring program in legal and rehabilitation fields.

Hair samples are sent to the Cansford Laboratory in Cardiff, UK, and results are returned within just 1 – 2 weeks of collection.  The laboratory is also able to prepare an Expert Witness Statement if requested (additional charges apply).
